If you're the proud owner of a 2025 BMW motorcycle in the US that should be equipped with the company's Emergency Call (E-Call) functionality, then you need to know about the Motorrad's latest recall. The optional system may apparently have been accidentally deactivated due to a software programming error in BMW's latest update.
Because of this error, riders expecting the E-Call functionality to automatically notify first responders in the event of a crash may not, in fact, be able to rely upon the system to do so. Under proper operating conditions, the E-Call system is meant to notify first responders in the event of a crash, as well as automatically transmit location data.
According to BMW of North America's records, owners of bikes of the following models may be affected:
- 2025 BMW R 1300 GS
- 2025 BMW R 1300 GS Adventure
- 2025 BMW K 1600 GT
- 2025 BMW F 900 GS
- 2025 BMW F 800 GS
- 2025 BMW S 1000 R
- 2025 BMW S 1000 RR
Approximately 33 total units across all models are believed to be affected by this recall in the US market. Per BMW, this represents 100 percent of bikes that were equipped with this option in the American market for 2025. There may be a single instance of a warning message appearing on the instrument cluster if this error has occurred, but according to BMW, this message will only appear once. So the rider may or may not be aware that the system is not functioning as expected.
BMW filed a safety recall report with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on July 25, 2025. As of July 16, 2025, the company says it has not received reports of accidents or injuries related to this recall.
The BMW dealer network was notified of this issue on July 23, 2025. Additionally, BMW plans to send out notices to affected owners via First Class mail, on or about September 12, 2025. The recall remedy service will involve an Over-The-Air (OTA) software update to the electronic control units (ECUs) of affected motorcycles.
Per the recall notice, owners of affected bikes will be instructed on how to check the functionality of their E-Call operation via the notice that BMW plans to mail. If necessary, owners will also be able to bring their affected motorcycles to their local authorized BMW dealer for a software update to remedy the problem, which will be performed free of charge.
