'If unfit for office Raab had any honour he'd resign - and a decent PM would sack him'

If he had an ounce of honour, Dominic Raab would resign as Foreign Secretary.

And should the Cabinet minister refuse to do the right thing, a decent Prime Minister would sack him immediately – which probably means Boris Johnson is unlikely to do anything.

The more we learn about Raab and Johnson going on holiday as Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, the more we witness the terrible price paid by others for Tory incompetence.

Both men are dangerously bumbling amateurs in an era crying out for dedicated, smart leaders with cool judgment who put the national interest before personal comfort.

Raab in particular – who went to a five-star resort in Crete, where he reportedly refused to call his Afghan counterpart about airlifting British military interpreters to safety – is unfit to hold a great office of state.

The people of Britain and Afghanistan deserve a better Foreign Secretary.

Don’t waste it

The Covid booster jabs scheme is one the NHS will deliver, given adequate resources.

There is a legitimate public debate about giving a third dose here when billions in large parts of the world are awaiting an initial jab.

One role of governing is to promote and protect the wellbeing of the nation, a role the Conservatives regularly flunk, so delivering the jabs in autumn is crucial.

What would be indefensible, is if the Tories hoarded tens of millions of jabs which are unlikely to be used.

Releasing excess doses, particularly to poorer nations, is vital when none of us are entirely safe until everybody is safe.

Law unbroken

Scotland and Manchester United legend Denis Law’s intelligent discussion of his Alzheimer’s diagnosis is inspiring.

The former footballer’s lack of bitterness is remarkable and hopefully a man who millions looked up to during his playing days will now be able to comfort others who are in a similar difficult position to himself.
