If this happens when you go to the toilet, it could be an omicron symptom

Everyone knows the three key symptoms of Covid-19 - the cough, the raised temperature and the loss of taste or smell.

But many people have reported other signs of omicron, including a sore throat, fatigue and a headache.

Now, another possible indication that you may have omicron has been identified by the United States-based Center for Disease Control, or CDC, the Mirror reports.

If when you pop to the bathroom you find you have diarrhoea, it could well be a sign that you've caught Omicron, the CDC said.

NBC Chicago reported people with compromised immune systems are the most likely to experience diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

These might be people recovering from Covid, although John Hopkins Medicine notes that around 20 per cent are likely to experience diarrhoea as a symptom shortly after catching the virus.

Of course, diarrhoea is also not necessarily a symptom of Covid as it is a symptom of other medical conditions.

The CDC lists the following symptoms as associated with Omicron:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

The NHS says anyone with even mild symptoms of Omicron should: "Get a PCR test (test that is sent to a lab) to check if you have COVID-19 as soon as possible.

"Stay at home and do not have visitors (self-isolate) until you get your test result – only leave your home to have a test. Check if people you live with need to self-isolate."
