For those that know me, I can be a bit, shall we say discerning? Some might say hard to please.
But nothing melts my goth heart like a Liverpool audience watching a production of Dirty Dancing. Last night I went to see the latest production of the classic film on the stage.
The sweltering heat of the day made me feel like I really was at the Kellerman's holiday resort and when the show opened the roar of the audience must have been heard from outside the historic Empire Theatre. With every well known line came a thunderous applause from the (mainly female) audience.

The buzz among the packed out seats created an atmosphere of total immersion and excitement for this show. Laugh out loud moments shared by a crowd of hundreds and the roof nearly came off when Johnny Castle (played this year by Michael O’Reilley) took his shirt off.
This audience was a joy to watch this iconic stage show with and I only hope the cast felt that too. As they thanked Liverpool for its standing ovation, I think I could see they did.
During the curtain call, I was transfixed between watching the incredible performers and the awe of beaming faces from the audience, all up out of their seats swaying in unison to an unbeatable soundtrack of hits that littered my childhood. Even when leaving the theatre and walking out into the sunset across the city you could hear people singing the songs, dancing and smiling at each other.
To me, it was proof that only a Liverpool audience can elevate an already five star show to the next level. This is my second time seeing the show at the Empire over the years and it should be a rite of passage to watch Dirty Dancing in Liverpool because, well... I had the time of my life.
Dirty Dancing runs at the Empire until Saturday, June 17, for tickets visit here.
