‘If that were David Silva’ - Pundits respond to Jamie Paterson’s Bristol City magic

Pundits and teammates have been marvelling over Jamie Paterson's display at Ashton Gate last night.

The midfielder provided an impressive assist for Famara Diedhiou to open the scoring before doubling the lead with a wonderful free-kick which clipped in off the bar.

Paterson's dominating performance was marvelled by teammates past and present, with Liam Walsh, Hakeeb Adelakun and Bobby Reid all taking to Twitter to praise the former Derby County loanee for his goal involvements.

Speaking on the EFL on Quest highlights show, pundit Colin Murray discussed Paterson's impact with former Aston Villa forward Darren Bent and spoke about what impact his assist would have if it had come from a Manchester City legend.

Murray said: "He did a couple of things in this game. If it were David Silva, what would we be saying?"

To which Bent responded: "The first assist here with the touch is fantastic and you can tell that he's meant to do it as well because he's gone for the one-two.

"It's a great touch and great finish but he was instrumental in everything they did well today. Its the weight of the touch too. He's gone for the one-two but as I said it's a great, great finish.

And when asked about why we have seen more impressive free-kicks with no fans in the ground (Paterson vs Hull, Rooney vs Preston), Bent responded by saying: "Less pressure. If you look at it from behind, that is right in that top corner. What a free-kick. He was the difference today."

Paterson's free-kick looped over the wall and hit the crossbar, clipping into the top corner to double City's lead against the Tigers at Ashton Gate.

Liam Walsh was one of the first to respond to his performance and especially his free-kick. Walsh himself is no stranger to scoring free-kicks, with his set piece goal against QPR early this season in the Carabao Cup one City fans won't forget in a hurry.

Rotherham United loanee and City winger Hakeeb Adelakun also tweeted his reaction to the performance, while also taking a dig at Paterson's lockdown haircut. He said: "Worst trim but what a player! BALLER!"

And former City youth product and striker Bobby Reid also marvelled at his assist. The Fulham forward said: "Yoooooo the touch."

Bristol City picked up their first win in their last 10 games at Ashton Gate last night and survived a Hull goal and late surge of pressure, but remain in 12th place in the Championship with several teams around them also picking up wins in the latest round of games.
