If Mike Iupati is still out, Ethan Pocic could start for Seahawks in season opener

The Seattle Seahawks took a number of hits to their offensive line this summer, and some of those players might not be available come the start of the regular season.

Projected starting left guard Mike Iupati, who the Seahawks signed this spring as a free agent, is one of those linemen. Having been sidelined throughout camp with a sore foot and calf, he’s slowly on the mend.

“Doing well, making progress,” coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday. “It’s going to be a race to the finish for the first game. I don’t know; it’ll be close.”

With Iupati still a question mark, Ethan Pocic has been running with the Seahawks’ first-team offense. He’s been looking the part, showing much-needed improvement from last season.

“The best he’s been. It’s the strongest he’s been, the most fit,” Carroll said. “His attitude is really strong. You know he’s really worked hard to get his mind right, mentality right. He’s been tough. He’s done a nice job and he’s played center as well.

“I really like that’s he’s had this opportunity because he took the challenge and mixed in with the first group and done an admirable job.”

Carroll confirmed Pocic would play in the opener if Iupati is unable to return by then.
