If Jesse Eisenberg isn’t Mark Zuckerberg, you can keep ‘The Social Network Part II’

Millennials, we must defend the David Fincher movie that completely wrecked us. I am, of course, talking about The Social Network and how that film consumed the minds of millennial women when it was released in 2010.

The David Fincher film was written by Aaron Sorkin and detailed the rise of Facebook. Specifically how Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) took the idea, made it his own, and didn’t care what bridges he burned along the way to become the CEO he is today. Now, with everything that is going on with Meta and how Facebook played a roll in the 2016 and subsequent elections, it isn’t surprising that Sorkin wants to return to Zuck’s world.

The issue is that the new movie is, seemingly, shaping up to be a different vibe. The Social Network Part II is looking at actors like Jeremy Strong to play Zuckerberg, according to Deadline, and sure. I love Strong, he’s one of my favorite performers working today. But that’s Eisenberg’s role. Whatever reasoning there is for the discussion, I want to say now: I don’t want this movie if Eisenberg isn’t there.

If it is about age, Jesse Eisenberg and Mark Zuckerberg are the same age. And if this is truly a “sequel” to Sorkin’s first film, then I’d rather Eisenberg play the role again than anyone else take the dive into it. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are also rumored to be a part of it but there is no news on who the two would play in the film.

Make it a true sequel if you’re really going to do this

The joy of The Social Network was that none of us really knew the truth about what happened with Facebook. Seeing how Sorkin told the tale of Zuckerberg becoming the face of Facebook was part of what made that movie work. Now, we know who Zuckerberg really is and I just think that The Social Network Part II will only work if they try to stay as true to the original film as possible.

I don’t know if they just haven’t asked Eisenberg back or if something is preventing him from returning but frankly, I don’t want this movie without him. Sorkin is directing it so I already don’t love that change but forcing us to watch a new actor tackle Zuckerberg makes this feel like an entirely different thing instead of a continuation.

So if possible, I just want to see Eisenberg take on the Meta version of Zuckerberg just to see what he does with the role.
