'If I had to choose' - Rafa Benitez signing wades into Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez debate

Mohamed Salah is ‘right up there’ with the pantheon of Liverpool’s legends but is not number one, according to former Anfield defender Glen Johnson.

The Egyptian became the fastest Reds player ever to score 100 league goals when he netted in the 3-3 draw with Brentford last week and recorded a sensational solo effort as Liverpool drew with title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

First moving to England in 2013, Salah managed just Premier League appearances with Chelsea but has since proved he is a world-class talent who belongs on the biggest stage during four full seasons on Merseyside.

After hitting a century of goals, Johnson insists Salah deserves to be talked about with the greatest players to have played in front of the Kop and told BettingOdds.com: “What he’s achieved has been amazing and I don’t think anybody could have envisioned that from his days at Chelsea.

“Mohamed Salah is unbelievable and he’s right up there amongst the best Liverpool players to have played in the Premier League.”

However, despite his incredible goal haul, Salah is not the best player to have worn the famous red shirt, in Johnson’s opinion.

The former right-back spent six years at Liverpool after being signed by Rafa Benitez, playing 29 times in the 2013-14 season as Liverpool finished second under Brendan Rodgers. He also made 71 appearances for Chelsea earlier in his career.

Luis Suarez was in unstoppable form, scoring 31 Premier League goals and it is the Uruguayan who gets the nod from Johnson when it comes to being number one.

“I played with Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, so it’s hard for me to look past players such as them, but if you have any of those players playing in your team then you’re doing something right,” he said.

“Mo deserves all the credit he’s getting as he’s a goal machine and he works his socks off. He’s bounced back really well from his time at Chelsea so he deserves all the credit that comes his way.

“If I had to choose who Liverpool’s best player of the Premier League era is then I’d have to go with Luis Suarez. The reason why is because I knew him and I knew what he was capable of doing.

“Unfortunately, I only get to see Mohammed Salah at the weekend like everybody else. I don’t know what he’s like in training, but from what I see during his games then I imagine he’s an absolute workhorse.”
