If constituencies had decided the outcome of the EU referendum

John Burns (Letters, 18 January) asks “What price democracy now?” in light of the Brexit and US presidential vote outcomes. The answer depends on what you mean by democracy and whether you are on the winning side. Had the US election been decided on a majority of votes cast, then we would be awaiting Hillary Clinton’s inauguration. Had the Brexit vote been based on existing parliamentary constituencies and their representatives (the closest arrangement the UK has to the US electoral college), then the UK would be remaining a part of the EU.
