'If Boris loses no confidence vote it'll be down to Palace to get him out'

The Queen is not amused. Her Majesty is reportedly unhappy at being dragged into the escalating Brexit crisis.

If Boris Johnson loses a no confidence vote and refuses to budge then it will be up to the Palace to decide whether the squatter should be evicted from Downing Street.

It busts the myth that the Queen is somehow above party politics.

But the monarch has never been an idle spectator with a ringside throne.

They have always been a major player in the political process.

By accident of birth they are granted the privilege of a private chat each week with the Prime Minister.

By accident of birth they can summon at any time a meeting of the Privy Council – peers, senior ministers, bishops and judges – to ask for their opinions.

By accident of birth they sign off Charters governing the BBC, universities and, press regulation.

By accident of birth they are given access to every government file.

We have tolerated this because we admire the personal conduct and integrity of the current head of state.

Will we think the same when Prince Charles, who has frequently meddled in ministerial matters, takes over?

If you think the monarch should not be embroiled in the murky business of politics then you should want a new constitutional settlement.

That would make clear the role is entirely ceremonial and not Westminster’s version of VAR.
