'If anyone's got mum on speed it's you'... he was murdered by his girlfriend's teenage son. And she tried to cover it up

A teenager has been found guilty of murdering his mother's boyfriend by stabbing him in the head.

Bernard Ward, 18, was convicted by a jury of murdering 52-year-old Vincent Wilson following a Manchester Court trial.

Ward's mother, Nancy Smith, 48, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice before her son's trial.

She tried to cover up Ward's involvement in the killing.

Prosecutors said that Ward, also known as 'DJ', was 'not comfortable' with the relationship between Mr Wilson and his mother, and that there had been 'friction' between them.

Ward claimed that Mr Wilson had been abusive.

But a jury rejected his claims of self defence and found him guilty of murder.

Silverdale Avenue , Irlam (Manchester Evening News)

Jurors heard that on the day Mr Wilson died, on Friday, August 30, Ward had a row with his mother at their home on Silverdale Avenue in Irlam, Salford, where Mr Wilson also lived.

During the trial, Ward said that he had shouted at her after overhearing that she was taking 'speed', which his mother denied.

Ward went back into the house, where Mr Wilson was.

Ward said that Mr Wilson was asking what the shouting was about.

Telling him what he had overheard, Ward told jurors that Mr Wilson replied by saying 'you talk nothing but sh**, mind your own business'.

Ward claimed: "If anyone's got mum on speed it's you."

He told Mr Wilson he was going to call his brother because he 'can't cope anymore'.

After he got his phone, a confrontation followed.

Ward said Mr Wilson was demanding him to hand over the phone.

He alleged that Mr Wilson 'wanted a fight', and that he got a knife from the kitchen to try and 'get him away from me'.

He claimed that he began to suffer from a panic attack after Mr Wilson 'grabbed' him.

He said he couldn't think clearly during such episodes, and that he needed to 'get out of the situation'.

"I remember closing my eyes and I started hitting out with both of my hands," Ward said.

"He let go of me, I opened my eyes and he had a knife hanging out of his head."

Mr Wilson was able to walk out of the house in a 'complete daze', with the knife protruding from his head.

He went back into the house and an ambulance was called.

Smith saw Mr Wilson, and she ran out of the house shouting 'oh my god DJ has stabbed Vinny'.

When the police arrived, Smith told police that the attacker had left the area, in a bid to protect her son.

But officers learned that Ward was responsible and he was arrested.

Ward denied murder and stood trial.

He claimed that he was acting in self defence when he stabbed Mr Wilson.

His lawyers also raised the issue of diminished responsibility, saying that he was suffering from an abnormality of mental functioning at the time.

A psychiatrist instructed by the defence said that Ward is on the autism spectrum, and that this would have affected his ability to exercise self control.

But a prosecution psychiatrist disagreed.

After a two week trial, jurors found Ward guilty of murder on Wednesday afternoon.

He will be sentenced on Friday.
