If all goes well, Broncos will keep Kareem Jackson at safety

When the Broncos signed former Texans defensive back Kareem Jackson in March, there was uncertainty about whether he would play primarily at cornerback or safety.

Jackson has spent most of his career as a corner but he spent time at safety in Houston last season. Denver has had him practicing at strong safety this offseason and if all goes well, Jackson will stay there.

“In an ideal world, I think we’d like to keep him there, but as you know the world of NFL doesn’t remain ideal all the time,” coach Vic Fangio said after practice Tuesday. “His versatility will allow to get through some of those times. At some point here, we are going to have to start getting him reps at some of these other positions. Just a little bit just to keep him warm there.”

The Broncos will give Jackson some time at cornerback this offseason in case he needs to fill in for an injured player during the season. If the secondary remains healthy, though, he’ll be a safety.

Right now, Denver’s starting secondary appears to be Jackson and Justin Simmons at the two safety spots with Chris Harris and Bryce Callahan at the two cornerback spots. Players competing for rotational playing time include Will Parks, Su’a Cravens, Isaac Yiadom and De’Vante Bausby.
