'Idiotic' vandals paint over 20mph speed limit signs

Vandals have spray painted over speed warning signs – put up in a bid to slow down traffic - in a village near Bristol.

Yobs daubed the 20mph speed limit signs at the entrances to Portbury village in grey spray paint.

Signs at the entrances to the village by the school, at Mill Lane and Caswell Lane were all targeted.

The damage was carried out over the weekend, angering local residents.

However, community spirited locals in Portbury refused to let the vandals win.

And resident Rob Larder was quickly out with his paint pot and brushes – to repaint the signs – by hand.

A 20mph limit was introduced in the village – from just before the school to Mill Lane – last year following complaints about speeding traffic.

Previously the limit through the village was 30mph.

The village is used as a cut through route by people driving from the Failand Road through the village to the M5 and visa versa.

Portbury Parish Council chairman Mike Phipps said the vandals actions were ‘idiotic.’

“We have no idea who did this, but clearly they are an idiot,” said Mr Phipps.

“As a village we are very annoyed at what has happened.

“Luckily one of our residents Rob Larder was straight out there and repainted the 20mph signs.

“The speed limit was introduced about a year ago following concerns about people racing down from the A369 into the village past the school.

“The limit is there for a reason and to vandalise it like this is just idiotic.”
