Idiot thieves smash their way into bar despite 'cashless' sticker on door

Two thieves smashed their way into a city centre bar - even though a "We are cashless" sticker was prominently displayed on the front door.

It happened at The Angus Tap and Grind in Dale Street in the early hours of today (Thursday).

After rooting around the premises for around 90 seconds, the thieves escaped with the only cash they could find - the staff tips jar.

The Angus said it would be open as normal from 4pm today, despite the glass in the front door being smashed.

Co-owner Dan Nicolson said: "It was in the early hours of the morning. A car pulled up and two men got our and smashed our large door window - which had a sticker on saying We Are Cashless - and got into the bar.

"The CCTV shows one heading downstairs, kicking in the staff room door in the process and another rooting around upstairs.

"They left within around 90 seconds with our staff tips jar (the only cash on the premises) and a few other bits.

"While the value of what they took isn't too great the hassle and cost of having to deal with the repairs is something we could do without, particularly just as we're getting back on our feet post lockdown."

The Angus opened just under a year ago, and also hosts intimate live music gigs. The same proprietors also run The Coach House by The Angus in Maryland Street, which opened earlier this year.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We were contacted at 1.50am today, Thursday August 19, following reports two unknown males had forced entry to The Angus Tap and Grind on Dale Street in Liverpool city centre.

"The males carried out a search of the property. A set of keys is believed to have been taken.

"Forensic and CCTV enquiries have been carried out."
