Identical twins celebrate their 90th birthdays in style

Identical twins Sheila Atherton and Margaret Hayes celebrated their 90th birthdays at the weekend and said the secret to a long and healthy life was to "keep dancing".

The sisters were born on December 29, 1929, and grew up in Bidston, Wirral.

Of Irish descent, from Wexford and Carlow, the girls were award-winning Irish dancers in their younger days.

Sheila, who married Peter Atherton and went on the have two sons Martin and Kieran, worked at Cammell Laird and the old Liverpool Children's Hospital where she made callipers.

Margaret, better known as Peggy, never married and describes herself as an "unclaimed treasure".  She worked at the Cadbury factory for 37 years.

The sisters have outlived all of their family with the exception of 84-year-old baby sister Ann.

Sheila and Margaret celebrated their big day in style with dinner at 60 Hope Street surrounded by family and friends.
