Ideas of what 'eyesore' derelict pub could be turned into to serve Old Basford community

Local residents have shared their views on what they want to see a derelict pub on a busy city centre road be used for, with one describing its current state as an 'eyesore'.

The Newcastle Arms on Nuthall Road in Old Basford was once a thriving pub which was regularly packed out.

But the pub has stood derelict for years since the decision was made to close it down.

Ever since then, barriers have been in place around the premises.

And locals have shared what they want to see happen to the former popular drinking hole, as one describes what it looks like now as an 'eyesore'.

Wendy Keeton, 66, who's retired and lives off Nuthall Road, said: "It just looks like an eyesore and it doesn't look good when you're driving past it.

"Maybe it could be turned into a youth or community centre so there's something for younger people to do.

"That would be one of the better things to do - I don't want it to be a takeaway shop, we've got enough of them around.

"We haven't got a greengrocers where we can get fresh fruit and veg and things like that, so maybe that could be an option.

"Social housing could also be good because there is not enough of it around at the moment in my view.

"For 43 years I've been here, it's been a pub as long as I can remember, but when it was a pub, it did attract trouble."

Abdas Khan, 20, who lives in Basford, said: "The pub has always been there, but I've never been in as I don't drink.

"If there wasn't a McDonald's just down the road, then I would suggest that, as that would be great."

Charlotte Brightley, 24, a university student living in Basford, said: "It would be good to see it as a restaurant or something like that.

"There are loads of takeaways around here, but there are not too many place where you can go to sit and eat.

"That would be nice."
