Icy weather warning as North East plunges back into freezing temperatures

Cold and frosty weather will make a return to the North East overnight after a brief spell of mild temperatures.

Snowfall caused disruption around the region's roads on Friday morning and icy weather made some paths and roads treacherous on Saturday.

The freezing cold weather became much warmer and brighter on Sunday, allowing the snow and ice to melt, and on Monday temperatures were expected to rise to a much warmer 9C.

However, the cold snap is set to return on Monday night with temperatures falling away to 1C.

A Met Office weather warning for ice is now in place for most of the North East between 3pm on Monday and 11am on Tuesday.

Only coastal areas are excluded from the overnight alert.

Icy stretches are expected to form after a bout of heavy rain clears.

Frost and ice is forecast to become widespread in the early hours of the morning across the North East.

The forecaster says there will be an increased risk of slips and injuries during the warning period.

Tuesday will be sunny but it will remain cold with highs of around 3C.

Temperatures will stay low, with sleet and perhaps snow expected on Thursday morning.
