Icy stretches expected as Met Office issues weather warning for the North East

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the North East as "icy stretches" are expected.

The weather warning predicts "icy stretches" on Tuesday morning due to temperatures dropping overnight.

The warning is in place from 2am to 11am on Tuesday, January 4 and affects the whole region.

The Met Office has said people should expect to see "icy patches" on some untreated roads, cycle paths and pavements

It also warns that untreated pavements could lead to injuries from slips and falls.

Further information on the Met Office website states that following a night of rainfall, temperatures have dropped leaving "icy stretches" to form.

A statement said: "Following overnight rainfall surface temperatures are now dropping with icy stretches expected to form."

The weather forecast for the week

Tuesday

A cold, frosty start leading to a mainly dry day with lengthy sunny spells. Perhaps a little more cloud developing later in the afternoon. Feeling significantly colder than recent days, especially in the wind, which strengthens during the day. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Tuesday evening

Largely dry overnight. Some cloud to start, but long clear spells developing, leading to another cold night. Strong winds, with gales possible on coasts. Minimum temperature 0 °C.

Wednesday

A windy, cold start, but with plenty of sunshine for most through the day. Isolated coastal showers possible, especially later. Winds will ease during the day, but still feeling cold. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday

Frosty clear start Thursday, then rain, snow and strong winds soon arriving. Cold and breezy Friday, with wintry showers mainly on western hills. Further rain and strong winds Saturday.
