The world’s last sea-going paddle steamer has had to scrap sailing today due to boiler issues.
The iconic Waverley was scheduled to pick up passengers from Ayr this afternoon, after taking off from Glasgow this morning, but was “unable to operate due to an electrical fault in one of the boiler control systems.”
Excited passengers were due to head for Girvan aboard the ‘national treasure’, taking in the stunning Firth of Clyde as Ayrshire bathes in toasty temperatures of 26 degrees.
Waverley Excursions apologised to those booked on the trip, adding that customers could transfer their booking to any future sailing.
They said: “Unfortunately, Waverley is unable to operate today due to an electrical fault in one of the boiler control systems.
“We have been working with several third parties in an attempt to rectify the issue as quickly as possible, but we have not been able to cure the fault in the time available before operating today’s sailing.
“Our aim has been to avoid cancelling this sailing as we know how disappointing this is for our passengers and loyal supporters. We therefore deeply apologise for doing so, and the inconvenience it will clearly cause.
“All those booked to sail will today will be contacted directly and have the option of transferring to any future sailing including the next scheduled cruise to Ayr, Girvan and Round Ailsa Craig on Mondays August 1 and 15. A full refund can also be requested.
“Once again, we sincerely apologise for having to make this late cancellation. Our staff, engineers and contractors will continue in their efforts to get Waverley back in service.”
Passengers appeared understanding of the cancellation and were keen to see the unique vessel receive the repairs she requires.
Doreen Fisher said: “The Waverley is more important than us missing our much anticipated trip. Looking forward to the 1st August now.”
Gordon Brough said: “Let’s hope she gets repaired soon and those lucky enough can enjoy the experience that the Waverley still provides.”
Richard Mills added: “We’re disappointed not to be able to sail today, the final day of our Clyde holiday, but feel more sorry for you all at Waverley Excursions who try so hard to keep her sailing for our enjoyment.”
