Iconic Stokes Croft mural Breakdancing Jesus destroyed by vandals

Towering above passers-by making their way along a busy Stokes Croft, Breakdancing Jesus has become a landmark symbol of the area.

Since being painted in 2013 by artist Cosmo Sarson it has caught the attention of thousands, even amongst the highly decorated walls along the same road.

Hand-standing at more than eight metres tall and containing more than 1kg of gold glitter the mural, which went on to become the subject of worldwide media coverage, towered over The Canteen and Hamilton House.

After six years, however, the work of art has been defaced in an act of vandalism which saw much of the face and torso covered in bright blue spray paint late last night (Monday, July 22) or in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, July 23).

CCTV footage, captured by The Canteen, shows a hooded figure parking a bike in front of the building before spraying over the camera itself with blue paint.

The artist behind the iconic mural took to Facebook to write: "Someone in Bristol must be covered in blue paint and have a massive hangover.

"Sad to see it so violently taken over but it had good innings.

"Look forward to seeing what goes up in its place.

"Bristol, I loves ya."
