Iconic Stavros Flatley Britain's Got Talent act years on - from split to scandal

From dancing in blonde wigs to rolling in money piles from gigs, the Stavros Flatley father and son duo has proven to become one of Britain's Got Talents' best ever acts on the show.

At one point, the pair even claimed they had made up to two MILLION pounds with their simple act, a combination of Michael Flatley's Riverdance style, and Harry Enfield's Greek kebab shop owner Stavros.

This mix had fans howling after every show, and they garnered quite the cult following after finishing fourth on the talent show, only behind Julian Smith, Susan Boyle and winners Diversity, the Daily Record reports.

Dancing dad Demi Demetriou, 40, said of his then 12-year old son Lagi at the time: "I can’t express to you how proud I am of Lagi.

It’s not just the way he dances or the way he handles himself, but the best thing in the world is for somebody else to say, 'You’ve got a good kid'.

"I know it’s only a silly little dance and we just have a bit of fun, but I’m proud of him like you wouldn't imagine."

So what happened after Britain's Got Talent aired?

From TV to touring

The duo became well known after the show with doppelganger son Lagi often surrounded by fangirls.

Dad Demi was reluctant to go on a life of showbiz and leave his full-time job in the electrical business, stating he could do both.

At the time, Demi said: "I can still head the business and do a few bits of dancing."

He also had to sell his restaurant, adding: "One of the hardest things I’ve done is sell the restaurant, but I did it because I wanted to spend more time with my family.

"Regardless of what everyone says, the food was terrible, but we were still booked out."

A business hand in too many places

Sadly, not long after the inception of Stavros Flatley onto our screens, Demi's electrical firm, Lagi Contractors Ltd went into administration and sub-contractors said they owed them £100,000.

Demi is said to have personally lost £180,000 when it happened with the business in debt by more than half a million.

A change in diet and mind

After this, Demi was told by health professionals that he was 'too big for his own good', so decided to go on a diet.

In 2017, the duo participated in the show Sugar Free Farm, going on a sugar free diet.

An MRI scan showed Demi's unnatural amount of belly fat meant he risked suffering a from heart attack - and he got emotional on the show in front of son Lagi.

On Sugar Free Farm, Demi said: "The doctor said it was the worst place to carry fat because it could lead to all sorts of health problems, like heart disease, strokes, diabetes and high blood pressure.

"I was putting my life at risk but eating less would cut my chances.

"The MRI results were a big shock as I’d never had any health issues in the past, so it was a real wake-up call."

More television appearances

That same year as Sugar Free Farm, the father and son duo went as Kenzii & Aaron's date for ITV2's 'Dress To Impress' and previously went on Celebrity Coach Trip in 2011.

Ten years on from their iconic ITV audition, the duo returned to the show to perform a cameo in 4MGs semi finals appearance in 2019, then returned for Britain's Got Talent: The Champions the same year.

Quitting for good - or a joke?

After being given the golden buzzer by Simon Cowell, Demi said: "We’ve done this for 10 years for a joke. We’ve done so many amazing things but what is there left to do?

We’ve done the Royal Variety, we’ve played in China, Monaco - everywhere.

"When we got to The Champions, I thought this was the right time to leave. But Simon Cowell told me not to quit forever. So I will return for some shows."

So the duo famously quit on the same show they began on nearly a decade ago - some shock to the audience!

Living the normal life

Lagi opened a barber shop in Cyprus, and Demi recruited 17-year-old nephew Samson in his place.

Demi said: "He has a six-pack - I’ve given up getting one of those."

Stavros Flatley came in second behind Twist and Pulse for the champions shows returned for Britain's Got Talent Christmas Spectacular in 2020.

Family, fame and love

Demi now has a water sports shop in Cyprus alongside Lagi's barber shop which boasts a Stavros Flatley Museum in the toilet.

Lagi got engaged to partner, Annika, on New Year's Eve in 2020 and posted a pic of them on Instagram saying: "I didn't get a trim and oh yeahhh guess what."

The couple also said they were expecting their first child in 2021 with Baby Demetriou born in April.

Lagi said that they called their daughter Xenia.

So, the dancing duo have been on quite the journey over the last decade of performing, but have little to show aside from a toilet-based museum!

You can watch the new series of Britain's Got Talent that resumes on Saturday April 30, at 8pm on ITV.
