Iconic Star Wars clip shows moment cast mistook David Prowse for a Scot

An unearthed Star Wars clip reveals Darth Vader was initially mistaken for a Scot thanks to the actor's Bristol accent.

David Prowse, who was born in Southmead, played Darth Vader in the legendary series and had such a distinct accent that his castmates thought he was Scottish.

In behind-the-scenes footage uploaded to YouTube, a voiceover artist said: "Finding the right voice for Darth Vader was another challenge - Lucas had never intended to use the onset vocal performance of David Prowse."

A crew member then explains: "I can still hear David Prowse's accent in the Darth Vader mask muffled cause he would do the real dialogue.

"It was hilarious and terrifying at the same time cause we didn't know what Darth sounded like. That was the first time we heard him. Is that it? it going to be some Scottish guy or what is this?"

Prowse was initially cast as Vader for his physique as a successful weightlifter, but the character was ultimately voiced by US actor James Earl Jones, as the Daily Record reports.

The actor sadly died last November aged 85, after a short illness.

Tributes flooded in for Prowse who was reportedly nicknamed 'Darth Farmer' by his late Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher, because of his strong Bristolian accent.

His memorabilia has sold for thousands at auction including a prototype lightsaber and Darth Vader mask.
