Iconic pie shop at the heart of town's revival

A popular pie shop loved by locals for decades will soon be opening in a Merseyside town.

Pimblett's bakery was founded a century ago in 1921 by John and Mary Pimblett, and has been a staple in St Helens for many years.

In 2008 the recession forced the company to hand over production of the pies to Arthur Bevan of Pimmies Pies Ltd, until 2021 when Pimblett's purchased the business back.

Pimblett's and Pimmies Pies were both favourites in the area, with the original St Helens branch of the bakery being popular with workers due to its location on Jackson Street, Westside Industrial Estate.

Alex McIntyre, 31, who lives in the Vulcan area of Newton-le Willows, told the ECHO: " People will undoubtedly find reasons to complain but the fact businesses want to invest in the town can only be good for the area"

Carol Beesley said: "I can't wait, love Pimmies pie!"

Jane Forrest told the ECHO: "Any shop opening is good news, it makes the street look better than shops with shutters."

The shop, which will open on Market Street, is among several developments planned for the town centre, with the Town Hall, currently derelict since 2008, currently undergoing structural reports for renovation and re-opening.

Ryan Little, who is opening the new shop, said: "We've got big aims, we want to provide fresh food, we've got plans for bringing some outdoor seating to the street, and converting upstairs to apartments."

Earlestown councillor Terry Maguire said: "Earlestown has an iconic and historic centre piece in its town centre, the Town Hall, and the people of the town would love to see this landmark back in regular use, having been closed since 2008."

As well as this, Earlestown train station, which is the first ever passenger line station, is in line for regeneration.
