The iconic Oldham Street venue the Night & Day Cafe has been nominated for a national venue award by industry paper Music Week. It’s up for the Grassroots Venue: Spirit Of The Scene award, which is voted for by the public.
The venue is up against Le Pub in Newport, Omeara in London, Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms, Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh, The Boileroom in Guildford, The New Adelphi in Hull, The Sugarmill in Stoke and Bristol’s Trinity Centre. “We’re honoured to have been nominated as ‘Grassroots Venue 2022’ at this years Music Week Awards, and we need your vote!” said the Night & Day’s owners.

“A huge thank you to Music Venue Trust and everyone who has supported the venue so far at such an important time for us.” The popular Grassroots Venue: Spirit Of The Scene award will be handed out in acknowledgement of the key community role many grassroots venues have played both during the pandemic, and in helping spawn the superstars of tomorrow,” Music Week added.
Voting for the award closes at 5pm on March 18, so there’s still time to cast yours.
The nomination comes at a crucial time for the venue, which was served with a noise abatement notice by Manchester City Council in November last year. It followed complaints by local residents in flats built near the venue in recent years. The abatement notice came in the same month that the venue was celebrating its 30th birthday, having been a cornerstone of the city’s music scene since opening in 1992. It launched a petition to have the notice removed, which quickly went viral on social media.

It was signed by more than 77,000 people and brought into relief the plight of venues that have become surrounded by new residential buildings, despite being a pre-existing business. The likes of Elbow, Johnny Marr and The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess were among those campaigning for the venue. But it’s not the first time that the venue was threatened with closure over noise complaints, with a similar situation flaring up in 2014.
The Night & Day has hosted thousands of bands over the years, from the likes of the Manic Street Preachers and Arctic Monkeys to recent bands like Wet Leg and Foxes.
