Iconic Northern Quarter coffee shop announce closure - and customers are in shock

One of the Northern Quarter's most iconic coffee and tea shops has announced it will close this week - leaving devoted customers in shock. North Tea Power is described as "one of the OGs of the NQ" - but has announced that after 13 years it will close for good on Sunday.

The Tib Street cafe is famous for its handcrafted coffee, loose leaf tea and handmade sandwiches and cakes. But bosses say they have had to make some "tough decisions" in announcing the closure.

Friends and fans have flooded their Instagram post with support after the announcement. The Northern Quarter venue has won plenty of acclaim over the years, including Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards, and a mention in the New York Times as one of the best places for coffee in Manchester.

The post on Instagram on Monday afternoon said: "You may have heard word on the street, you might not have believed your ears… Things are constantly changing here in NQ, over the past 13 years it’s been our pleasure to be a part of it all.

"After some tough decisions and some careful considerations, it seems that the right thing to do is to end our journey here. No time for frowns however, you still have a weeks worth of sun to come and enjoy a brew before we close our door for the final time this Sunday 18th June 2023."

Art director and Manchester entrepreneur Ste Wing summed up the mood of customers, writing in response to the post: "DEVO'd!! You guys started the coffee movement in my city and will forever be remembered for that.

"Megaaaa independent coffee, brews and all round good vibes! From being one of your first customers with @dannykelly, ot of the last this week... Thank you for the memories."

Danny Kelly added: "One of the OGs of the NQ. They even gave birth to Rudys Pizza in a way on Thursday nights. Thanks for the memories guys."

Lovewhereyougo wrote: "Oh nooooo... This really makes me sad. NTP is THE OG coffee shop and part of the proper old school places of the NQ".

North Tea Power was founded by Wayne Lew and Jane Spindler in the Smithfield Buildings arcade on Tib Street back in 2010. They started out as tea specialists, but swiftly grew a following for their barista espressos.

Fellow NQ and coffee businesses were also gutted to hear the news of the closure this week. Idle Hands coffee wrote: "Ahhh man, sorry guys. Manchester losing the OG specialists." Just Between Friends Coffee said: "Another loss to the Northern Quarter. Best of luck with any future plans guys."

Northern Flower wrote: "A big part of my personal and the NQ's history."

It's not yet known what's next for the team behind the venue. The MEN has approached North Tea Power for further comment.
