Iconic music venue Thekla returns ahead of reopening this week

A popular Bristol music venue will make a triumphant return this week.

Thekla, a former cargo ship, has been a staple of the city's nightlife for around 30 years, but she has been out of action all summer.

Now that her refurbishment has been completed, however, she will sail from the Albion Dry Dock - boasting a new £1million hull - and take up position once again at Mud Dock.

With two tugs pulling her along, she is due to start her short journey at 2pm today (Monday), finishing around 2.35pm.

Following a private relaunch event on Wednesday (September 11), the first Pressure student night aboard the new-and-improved ship will take place the following evening, before funk & soul night Funk The Boat takes place on Friday (September 13).

Saturday will see a Breakfast Records takeover with 15 top bands playing across two stages, before the return of Pop Confessional later that night.

Although Thekla undergoes regular, routine inspections and repairs, a detailed survey carried out in January revealed that the existing hull was nearing the end of its life.

A team of experienced craftsmen have worked on the boat, built in 1958, for three months.

Apart from the new hull, the dancefloor has been replaced, as has the flooring in the toilets.
