Iconic Liverpool department store to be demolished and replaced with flats

A Liverpool department store is set to be replaced with new flats and shops as part of a major transformation of part of the city centre .

The council's planning committee will decide next week on proposals to demolish Hughes House, the extension which houses TJ Hughes , and build a 10 storey building that will have 262 apartments and a roof terrace.

The three storey building on London Road that houses the shop would be torn down under the plans.

A report attached to the application, submitted by Town Square Developments, says the design of the new building will be "contemporary and contextual".

The report says: "The existing Hughes House building contributes to the strong built form with active ground floor retail uses on the northern side of London Road/Monument Place.

"However, the architectural style of the building is nondescript and contributes little to the character and setting of the street scene.

"The development proposal represents the opportunity to positively enhance the street scene and to create a stronger and more aesthetically pleasing built form in order to reinforce the scale and prominence of the buildings at this location which is a gateway into the City Centre ."

It is proposed that the flats in the new building would all be for rent.

Car parking would also be provided in the underground of the building under the current plans.

The application will be voted on by the planning committee on Tuesday.
