Iconic Edinburgh Jenners to close for good after deal to keep shop open falls through

Jenners will close for good this year, Frasers Group plc have announced.

The iconic Princes Street store will shut their doors for the final time this year after 183 years trading in the city.

Once one of the grandest department stores in the country, the store will now close due to a dispute between House of Fraser and the building's current owner, Anders Polvsen.

Owing to the disagreement, the Frasers Group released a statement this afternoon (January 25) to confirm that the store will close on May 3, 2021.

The move will now see around 200 people lose their jobs, with the future of the Jenners building currently undecided.

A spokesperson said: “Despite the global pandemic, numerous lockdowns and the turbulence caused for British retail, the landlord hasn’t been able to work mutually on a fair agreement, therefore, resulting in the loss of 200 jobs and a vacant site for the foreseeable future with no immediate plans.

"Our commitment to our Frasers strategy remains but landlords and retailers need to work together in a fair manner, especially when all stores are closed.”

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Jenners staff for their hard work and dedication."

In December, a spokesperson for Anders Polvsen told Edinburgh Live that any works to the building would help "strengthen" the department store, and denied plans to turn the site into a hotel.

Prior to the disagreement with Frasers, they said:

"The iconic Jenners building will always stay and is the very DNA of our plans. In the same way as the department store is a vital future part of the project. We are not turning the Jenners department store into a hotel.

"We are strengthening the department store. The hotel plans are only meant for areas of the building not being properly used today."
