Iconic Dublin restaurants that have closed through the years

With the recent announcement that Coppering Row has been forced to close its doors after 13 years, we look back at some of the iconic Dublin restaurants we wish were still open.

Unfortunately, the capital has seen several restaurants close their doors or stop operating for good through the years, from Italian to seafood eateries and everything in between.

Many former Dublin restaurants will be fondly remembered as locations where we would have celebrated special occasions.

Have a look at some of the iconic Dublin restaurants whose doors are no longer open and reminisce about the memories they may bring.

Nico's Italian Restaurant

In November 2018, the capital lost one of the oldest and most traditional Italian restaurants.

Nico's first opened its doors on Dame Street back in 1963 and served the public authentic Italian cuisine for over 55 years.

From fresh fish dishes to the classic carbonara, we wish we could taste their tiramisu just one more time.

The Lord Edward

One of the capital's other oldest restaurants, this time in the seafood category, sadly stopped operating in 2015.

The upstairs restaurant formerly located in the Christchurch area first started trading in 1967 and served delicious seafood for almost 50 years.

Fortunately, the pub is still open on the lower levels where toasties and a pint of Guinness come highly recommended.

The Gigs Place

The late-night diner on South Richmond Street opened at the start of the 1970s for those in the music and entertainment business. It was loved by celebrities as well as generations of punters who danced the night away in nearby Harcourt and Camden Street venues.

Their opening hours were midnight until 6 am serving tasty food and even bottles of wine flowed for those who wanted to continue the party until the early hours of the morning.

Dublin nights out haven't been the same since The Gigs Place shut its doors for good back in 2012.

Beaufield Mews

The Stillorgan eatery will be fondly remembered as the perfect setting for a romantic meal and many couples would have chosen it as the wedding venue with their nearest and dearest.

Unfortunately, the beloved restaurant stopped operating after an incredible 71 years in 2019.

Dux and Co

Dux and Co, now Eatokyo Noodles and Sushi Bar, on Wellington Quay was one of the first places to offer BYOB in the capital.

The restaurant's owners were well known on the festival food scene providing their cuisine at the like of Electric Picnic as well as being winners of the Dublin Street Food Awards.

We still dream about the croquettes on the Mediterranean inspired menu.

The Chili Shack

We are still not over this Stoneybatter closure. The Chili Shack made an impact on the Dublin food scene back in 2017 with their famous beast burger that left many of us in a food coma.

Even though the Prussia Street location was only around for two years, it became well known as the place to go for chicken wings and build-your-own chili bowls.
