Iconic Dublin landmark at Glasnevin Cemetery to be lit up red all week and here is why

A historic tower in north Dublin will be turning red as part of a weeklong event.

The iconic O'Connell Tower on the grounds of Glasnevin Cemetery will be lit up for National Fire Safety Week for a week from Monday.

In a poignant social media post, Dublin Fire Brigade said: "The iconic O'Connell Tower at Glasnevin Cemetery Museum is turning red for National Fire Safety Week.

"A sad fact is that some of the residents in the shadow of this tower will have died in a preventable home fire.

"The tower has changed the way it looks at night, change the way you look at your home tonight."

The emergency service also went on to share the following fire safety tips:

  • Close doors
  • Unplug electrical, especially chargers
  • Is your smoke alarm working?
  • Do you have an escape plan?
