Iconic Dark Hedges trees fall during Storm Arwen

Two of the Dark Hedges trees were blown over in the strong winds of Storm Arwen last night.

The iconic Co Antrim trees which run along Bregagh Road are a popular tourist attraction and have featured in popular HBO television series Game of Thrones.

The trees fell into the middle of the road as a result of the strong winds brought by Storm Arwen and one has since been cleared.

UUP Councillor Darryl Wilson said: "Unfortunately one of the centuries old Beech trees at the Bregagh Road ( Dark Hedges) was a victim of last night's weather. Lots of debris on most roads this morning. Take care out there."

Storm Arwen caused disruption across Northern Ireland on Friday, November 26, with reports of multiple trees having fallen down in the winds.

A yellow weather warning was put in place and it was reported that winds reached speeds of 70mph during the storm.

The popular headteacher of St Mary's Primary School in Maghera, Francis Lagan, was also tragically killed when a falling tree struck his vehicle on the Dublin Road, Antrim.

He has been described as a devoted family man and a "true gentleman" who cared deeply for his community, which has been devastated by his loss.
