Iconic Chapters Bookstore to close its doors permanently

Chapters Bookstore has announced that it will close its doors next year.

The store has been a staple of the Dublin book scene having first opened in the capital 40 years ago.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Chapters thanked their customers for all their support over the years.

Chapters will be hosting a massive clearance sale with a 2 for 1 offer on all books excluding bestsellers, which will take place in-store only.

Chapters, which is Irelands largest independent books store, opened its first store on Wicklow Street in 1983. Since then, it moved to St Stephens Green, Henry Street and Abbey Street, until it opened at its current location on Parnell Street.

People were quick to take to social media expressing their shock at the news.

One person wrote that Chapters "is an excellent bookshop that always throws up an expected gem (or 5) whenever I pop in. My 4 and 6 year old have been excited all week about our plans for a visit tomorrow. A big loss for Dublin."

Another wrote: " Oh no! I have spent so much time in Chapters over the last 30 years since I was old enough to go in to town by myself in the 90's as a teenager. From Abbey St to Parnell St. Getting happily lost for hours. So sad to hear this."

The Gutter Bookshop also paid tribute to Chapters and its staff, tweeting: "Noooo! So sorry to read this guys. What a sad loss to Dublin's bookshops. You'll be HUGELY missed. Wishing all your staff the best at what must be a horrible time. Bx."
