Iconic Back to the Future Hoverboard fetches £375,000 at memorabilia auction

A film and TV memorabilia auction in Hertfordshire, which has sold iconic items including the Hoverboard from Back to the Future and Wilson the ball from Cast Away, has raised over £6 million in its first day.

Hundreds of bidders from around the world took part in Prop Store's live auction on Wednesday (November 10) via internet and telephone. The auction will continue on Thursday and Friday.

Marty McFly's Hoverboard from the cult 80s film trilogy was the event's showstopper, fetching an incredible £375,000 in bidding.

Wilson, meanwhile, a major figure in Tom Hanks' 2000 landmark, sold for an impressive £287,500.

Other items included the helmet worn by Russell Crowe's character Maximus Decimus Meridius in the film Gladiator during his iconic fight scenes, along with a light-up X-Wing filming miniature space fighter model from 1983 cult classic Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

These sold for £225,000 and £237,500 respectively.

Prop Store chief executive Stephen Lane commented: "Prop Store are absolutely thrilled with the results from the first day of our three-day Entertainment Memorabilia auction. We have seen some record-breaking prices for some incredibly iconic lots, including Marty McFly's Hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II and Buddy's costume from Elf!"

Buddy the Elf's outfit, from the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell, fetched £218,750.
