Arc’teryx might dominate the conversation when it comes to high-performance shells, but 66°North is taking a different approach with its latest release.
Instead of building for extreme conditions, the Icelandic label’s new Aðalvík Packable Collection is designed for unpredictable, changeable, and often inconvenient weather we encounter every day.
Founded in 1926, 66°North has built its reputation on crafting gear capable of handling Iceland’s notoriously volatile climate.
That heritage underpins the brand’s ethos to this day, but with a focus more on portable gear than on expedition-ready protection.
That said, like Arc'teryx, 66ºNorth also offers hard-core waterproof shells, such as the recently announced GORE-TEX Pro-lined Tindur GTX Pro Jacket.
Packable shells take centre stage
All pieces in the Aðalvík collection are designed to be lightweight enough to carry at all times, packing down into an integrated pouch with a hook for easy attachment to a bag or belt loop.
Each garment is made from 100% recycled, PFC-free polyester and offers waterproof protection up to 15,000mm, putting it firmly in the “reliable everyday shell” category rather than technical alpine territory.
The jacket and coat, leaning into a minimalist construction, both use fully taped seams for consistent water resistance, along with a two-way waterproof front zipper and an adjustable hood for better coverage in shifting conditions.
Storage is kept streamlined, with concealed front pockets maintaining a clean silhouette, while snap-adjustable cuffs help seal out wind and rain.
Breathability is described as moderate, striking a balance between weather protection and comfort during movement.
The poncho stands out as one of the more lifestyle-led pieces in the range, designed with cycling and urban use in mind, while still offering the same 15,000mm waterproof rating and packable design.
66°North positions the Aðalvík collection as a response to the reality of modern outdoor use, which is increasingly less about summiting peaks and more about navigating mixed conditions throughout the day.
In Iceland, where the weather can shift dramatically within hours, that approach makes sense; it also translates well for commuters, travellers, and anyone spending time outdoors in other countries.
