Iceland wants to open one of its massive Food Warehouses in Llanelli

Iceland could be opening one of its Food Warehouse stores in Llanelli.

The supermarket chain has lodged plans with Carmarthenshire Council for a store in the out-of-town Parc Pemberton.

If the plans are given the go-ahead the new supermarket would be built on a section of the existing car park next to Currys PC World.

The Food Warehouse offers chilled and frozen products, alongside fresh produce, in a warehouse-style setting which enables customers to buy products in bulk.

A design and access statement said: "The proposed building displaces 22 parking bays and the layout provides to replace these by extending the main car park into the existing soft landscaping.

"The number of parking spaces lost by the reconfiguration of the car park is six bays."

Iceland has set out that it is not looking to close its smaller store in Park Street in the town centre, as it hopes that The Food Warehouse store will "complement" it.

The creation of the new store would result in between 20 and 30 part-time and full-time jobs, the majority of which would be available to local people.

A spokesman for Iceland said: "We are rapidly expanding our The Food Warehouse chain of larger stores and we do indeed hope to open a store on Parc Pemberton in Llanelli , subject to the necessary planning and licensing approvals.

"If the opening goes ahead - and it would not be before mid-2020 - it will create approximately 30 new jobs.

"We now have over 100 The Food Warehouse stores across Wales, England and Scotland, and have proven our ability to trade these larger stores alongside our traditional Iceland high street stores in a growing number of towns and cities.

"We have no current plans to close the Iceland store in Llanelli town centre."

There are a number of Food Warehouse stores across the country, including Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd, Swansea and Cross Hands.
