Iceland shoppers can bag a free Aunt Bessie's roast dinner bundle in 'random act of kindness'

Imagine finishing gathering everything you need for your Sunday roast this week, and getting to the till only to be told it’s your lucky day and you don’t need to pay for it. Well, for some Greater Manchester shoppers, that was their reality when they got to the checkouts in Iceland yesterday.

Iceland and The Food Warehouse have this week launched a new initiative, which allows shop staff to giveaway an Aunt Bessie’s roast bundle at random. The scheme started on Monday, February 13 - and has already seen six families receive a free roast dinner.

Six customers who shopped at the Prestwich branch of the frozen food retailer had their ‘day made’ with the ‘amazing surprise’ which could come as a lifeline for some families as the cost of living crisis continues to see customers struggle to put food on the table each week.:

Chelsea Burgess, aged 30, said: “It’s nice to know that people were looking out for us today. It was totally unexpected, we only popped out for a few bits!”.

While 52-year-old June Burrows added: “It was such a nice surprise! This’ll make a lovely meal for me and the kids – I can’t wait!”.

Jamilah Choudhary, 57, was another one of the shoppers who received a free roast, and commented: “This’ll put a smile on all my family’s faces today – thank you, Iceland!”

29-year-old Jack Ford also benefited from the random act of kindness, saying: “I just popped out for my lunch, so this has been such an amazing surprise. It’s brought a smile to my face today.”

And couple Kevin and Cara Crowther thanked the retailer for its generosity, adding: “We’re absolutely made up that we were selected for such a lovely prize.”

The scheme - in partnership with Aunt Bessie’s - has been set up ahead of Random Acts of Kindness Day, which is celebrated nationally on February 17, with the supermarket giving away free roasts between now and Friday.

The initiative has been put in place after research revealed that over half (53%) of Brits plan on either reducing the number of hot dinners they eat or cutting them out completely due to cost of living.

Customers who go to purchase the £12.00 Aunt Bessie’s roast bundle at either the tills or online checkout could be randomly selected to get it for free.

The bundle includes one meat joint with a choice of chicken, turkey, gammon or pork, as well as three delicious sides or desserts. Some of the sides include crispy and fluffy roasties or cauliflower cheese, while dessert choices feature apple crumble or pie, sticky toffee pudding or jam roly poly.

Those who shop in store will get their order for free on the day, but if you can’t get to the shops, customers who have purchased the Aunt Bessie's deal online between February 13 and 17 will find out on Friday if they are receiving the money back as a refund.

An Iceland Spokesperson said: “Random Acts of Kindness Day is such a great way to celebrate our communities, but we want to extend our ‘random roasts of kindness’ for a little longer than one day. We are proud of the fantastic store staff who really know our customers best; it makes sense to leave the giveaways to them. We hope this puts a smile across a lot of faces.”

You can shop the Aunt Bessie’s bundle for £12 on the Iceland website here - and fingers crossed it’s your lucky day.
