Iceland issues urgent recall of popular chicken product from Irish stores over food safety fears

Batches of pre-cooked chicken slices have been recalled from Iceland stores across Ireland today.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, a number of batches have been found to contain an unauthorised pesticide called ethylene oxide.

It’s understood that the chemical is not authorised for use in foods that are sold in the EU.

The products affected by this recall are the Iceland 'ready to eat hot and spicy chicken breast slices' and the 'ready to eat sweet chilli slices'.

The implicated batches are identifiable by their use-by-date of 20/12/2021 and 21/12/2021 for the 115g packs of hot and spicy, and 20/12/2021 for the 115g packs of sweet chilli.

The FSAI has reassured customers that eating the contaminated products won’t pose an acute risk to their health.

However, health issues can occur if the chemical is ingested over a long period of time.

According to a statement released by the FSAI, “exposure to this substance needs to be minimised.”

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in Iceland stores across Ireland.
