Iceland in Beeston set to close next year

Frozen food retailer Iceland is set to close the shop that has been in Beeston for decades.

The store, in High Road, will shut its doors for the final time on January 8 next year due to rising rent costs making it unviable to continue trading.

It's a blow to the town's main shopping street, which has recently seen a resurgence with the opening of White Rose clothes shop, Doughnotts, and Essen General Store.

Seventeen staff, who currently work at the Beeston branch, were given the devastating news last Wednesday.

Acting manager Chris Green said: "It was a definite shock. I've been here the last five or six weeks and it's been taking decent money.

"We've had so many people ringing up to say they've been coming for years and they're really saddened by it.

"It's not great just before Christmas. . We are trying to carry on as usual but morale does seem low."

The store is thought to have been in the town for approximately 30 years.

Local resident Eileen Ward, 73, of Beeston, told Nottinghamshire Live she didn't know the store was closing down.

"I am absolutely shattered," she said. "I have been living here 30 years and have always used it. It’s bright and the prices are good and that’s important to me.

"I just like the shop and all the staff are friendly. It’s sad."

Nottinghamshire Live has contacted Iceland's head office is yet to have a response.
