Iceland creates 3,000 new jobs as it launches delivery trial with Uber Eats

Iceland has created 3,000 new jobs to help cope with a surge in demand for online groceries since lockdown.

New jobs include delivery drivers and extra staff in store to pick online orders.

The supermarket also said it was launching a trial with Uber Eats in London, with plans to roll out the service further if it works out.

Iceland's David Devany said: “We’ve been blown away by the demand for deliveries over the past six months with a four-fold increase in online orders since the beginning of lockdown.

“We see no sign of a slowdown in the demand for deliveries in the run up to Christmas, so a recruitment drive for more permanent staff was essential.

"Our store and delivery colleagues have gone above and beyond during lockdown introducing incredible measures to help their local communities.

He added: "I’m proud that our business has been able to adapt to the changing needs of our customer.”

Iceland said online orders are up more than 300% since April, and it's not alone in seeing that trend.

The supermarket said it can now handle 750,000 orders a week, but is looking to push this further.

Iceland’s move to create more jobs to help keep up with demand follows similar moves from the likes of Co-Op and Tesco.
