Ice warning for the North East as drivers told to expect Monday morning travel disruption

The North East is expected to face more weather-related disruption with ice set to hit the region.

The latest yellow weather from the Met Office will be in place from midnight on Sunday to around 10am on Monday, and affects western parts of County Durham and Northumberland .

Forecasters have warned that there could be an increase risk of injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces as well as disruption on the roads.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Showers are likely to persist over parts of Northern Ireland, west Scotland, northwest England and north Wales overnight.

"These will leave surfaces wet with icy stretches likely to form, particularly on untreated surfaces.

"Some snow is likely to fall over higher routes but any accumulations will be small and only affect a few sites."

The latest warning comes after a period of unpredictable weather for the North East.

Most recently, Storm Jorge brought winds of up to 70mph to coastal parts of the region as well as causing severe flooding across the country.

Monday forecast

After a frosty but sunny start for many places, cloud will increase and scattered showers arrive, especially across the Pennines.

The showers will be wintry over high ground. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 7°C.
