Ice Skating: East Kilbride's Olympia stars celebrate record-breaking year

Olympia Figure Skating Club have had a record-breaking year in 2019.

The club, based at East Kilbride Ice Rink, have enjoyed some amazing achievements over the last 12 months and hit an all-time best with a whopping 72 podium places this year.

This demonstrates that the hard work and dedication put in by the skaters and club coaches has really paid off.

Olympia has also had seven members selected for the GB young stars squad and six members selected for the GB development squad by British Ice Skating, the national governing body.

In 2019 six of their skaters also qualified for the 2020 British Championships, which will take place in Sheffield.

Rebecca Allan, Lauren Fleming, Mia Johnstone, Eva Loudon, Eloise McNulty and Destiny Wong all achieved their qualifying scores this year with another two youngsters, Julian Mullin and Mya Milne, achieving the scores required to compete in the next British qualifier in March 2020.

Olympia currently has three skaters ranked number one and two ranked number two at their age level for all competitive skaters in the UK. Lauren Fleming is ranked top and Mia Johnstone second in Basic Novice Ladies out of 110 skaters, while Mya Milne is first and in Level Three Ladies out of 121 skaters.

Julian Mullin is the top skater at Level Three men, with Jessica Beckett number two in Level One Ladies out of 185 competitors.

A spokeswoman for the Olympia said: “Our club coaches – Leanne Collins, Diane Dewar, Jennifer Milne, Melissa Riach, Lorraine Titi and Leanne Whiteside – are delighted with this year’s results.

“With the competition season over for winter, there is no let-up in the skaters’ training as coaches now are looking to the 2020 season to build on this year’s success and help all the skaters in the club progress.

“The club would also like to thank our sponsor, Yacine Titi of Zucca for his continued support as well as the club committee for all their help throughout 2019.

“A final thank you goes to the amazing coaches.

“We wish them and all the skaters of Olympia Figure Skating Club every success in 2020.”
