Ice rinks in Newcastle and the North East where you can to go skating this winter

Winter is coming, so it's time to get your skates on.

Ice rinks will be popping up around the region over the coming weeks, offering you the chance to try out a festive favourite activity and get into the Christmas spirit.

Some are already open, like Newcastle's, at Centre for Life, while Whitley Bay - of course - has an ice rink for life, not just for Christmas .

If you fancy sticking on some skates and getting out on the ice, here is where you'll be able to go skating near Newcastle.

Whitley Bay - Whitley Bay Ice Rink

Don't forget, there is an ice rink open all year round in Whitley Bay on Hillheads Road, with lots of skating tuition and competitions on offer too.

Whitley Bay Ice Rink is open throughout the winter period. An adult ticket costs £7.

Newcastle - Centre for Life

Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas in Newcastle anymore without the city centre ice rink , located outside Centre for Life in Times Square.

You do not need to book ahead to skate there, just turn up. Although parties of ten or more are advised to ring ahead.

The rink will stay open until late February. You can skate or just buy a hot chocolate and watch the fun.

A family ticket (two adults and two children or one adult and three children) is £27; Adult (18-plus) £10; Child aged five to 17 years £7.50; Child aged four and under £3; Concession (over-60, student, unwaged) £9.

Gateshead - MetroCentre

There is an indoor 'synthetic' ice rink at the MetroCentre's 'Arctic Experience', and it could be joined by an outdoor rink if plans are approved.

The indoor rink costs £2, with proceeds going towards Newcastle and Gateshead Foodbanks.

It costs £5 to skate there, and usual Beamish entry fees apply too - though many will be making use of their annual pass, which is the same cost as one visit.

The rink opens on Saturday November 16.

Sunderland - Keel Square

Sunderland's open-air real ice rink opens on Thursday November 21 and you can skate there until Sunday, January 5. A one-hour session, including fitting skates, costs £9 for adults and £7.50 for children over five, or £3 for aged four and under.
