Ice rink "in the sky" being launched at Winter Island event at Freight Island

An indoor "ice rink in the sky" is being built at the huge Winter Island festive event at Manchester's Escape to Freight Island food and drink hub.

Described as a "boutique ice rink in the sky", it will be located on the newly-constructed concretene mezzanine floor inside Escape to Freight Island, and will open to the public from Friday 12th November.

Positioned underneath the striking industrial roof of Depot Mayfield, the ice rink will also be part of the semi self-contained festive village, where food and drinks from Winter Island are available and can be pre-ordered around your skating schedule.

Organisers say skaters will get to "skate the high line" and "float on ice in the sky with remarkable views overlooking the stage" inside the Escape to Freight Island food and drink hub in the run up to Christmas.

There will also be a series of festive entertainment, from Christmas specials with The Untold Orchestra, to showings of all-time favourite Christmas films.

The offering at the space, built on the concrete and graphene floor, will include drinks like mulled wine and festive beer, and Christmas Market style favourites of grilled bratwurst and hog roast sandwiches.

Customers booking into the main Escape to Freight Island food and drink hub can also add in this experience as part of their time in the space, wtth bosses aiming to create a "one stop hang out destination" this Christmas.

The Winter Island will open from Friday November 5th for food and drink, and a host of free and ticketed events.

Tickets are priced at £13 / £10 for adult (peak / off-peak times); £11 / £8 for children (peak / off-peak times); and £10 for students.
