Ice hockey fans rally behind Co Armagh teen in hospital over Christmas

Ice hockey fans have rallied behind a Co Armagh teenager who will spend Christmas in hospital.

Blake McCaughey from Tandragee is currently at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London awaiting surgery in January.

The 13-year-old has a rare genetic disorder but that hasn't stopped him from becoming one of the Belfast Giants' most recognisable superfans.

Such is Blake's popularity, he has received dozens of Christmas cards from well-wishers across the world, including correspondence from as far as Canada and the United States.

Blake's mum Christine told Downtown Radio/Cool FM: "We have had letters from Canada, America and loads from the UK. He has received loads of hockey cards."

Christine added: "The postman at the hospital has got to know him. He keeps coming to the door and saying, 'Hey Blake, it's your fan mail'.

"Someone even drew him a lovely picture.

"People reach out and ask how things are going (on social media). Some of the hockey teams put it on Twitter to send Blake a card.

"And every card that is from someone to do with hockey, they put in brackets what team they support."
