Ice busts worth $1b 'break back of gang'

Another four men have been arrested and at least $1.5 million worth of illicit substances seized in the latest drug bust linked to an alleged crime group.

NSW police have now seized more than two tonnes of methamphetamine, valued at up to $1 billion, since being tipped off to a syndicate importing the drug concealed within marble stone in July 2022.

"Within a few months, we've really broken the back of that syndicate," Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Weinstein told reporters on Thursday.

Further investigations uncovered $100,000 in cash, 100 kilograms of illicit tobacco and a further 1.5kg of meth in four western Sydney homes this week.

The men were arrested on Wednesday at homes in Auburn, Lidcombe and Berala.

"The four that were arrested yesterday probably thought they got away with their part in the operation from late last year," Det Supt Weinstein said.

Police are working with offshore parties to locate the origin of the drug shipment, which passed through the UAE but is believed to have been sourced elsewhere.

"The reality is the consumption (of) drugs in this country is significant," Det Supt Weinstein said.

"Syndicates operate across this country because of the insidious and crazy amounts that users pay for drugs compared to other parts of the world."

Three of the four men - aged 29, 40, and 42 - appeared in Burwood Local Court on Thursday on drug trafficking charges.

The other, aged 35 and accused of dealing with crime proceeds, is due to face court in February.
