ICC still planning for T20 World Cup to go ahead in Australia this year

The ICC insist they are planning for this year’s T20 World Cup to go ahead as planned, dismissing reports that they have already agreed to postpone the tournament.

The World T20 is due to take place in Australia in October and November, but the coronavirus pandemic has left the competition in some doubt.

Lockdown measures and international travel restrictions have decimated the international fixture list so far this year, while variation in the severity of the outbreak in different countries could see some teams arrive at an unfair disadvantage.

Another factor is the probable rescheduling of the lucrative Indian Premier League for the autumn after it was postponed last month.

There is already due to be another T20 World Cup next year, held in India, so the suggestion has been that this year’s tournament will be pushed back to 2022.

However, the sport’s global governing body told Reuters: "The ICC has not taken a decision to postpone the T20 World Cup and preparations are ongoing for the event in Australia this year as per plan.

"This is on the agenda for the ICC Board meeting tomorrow and a decision will be taken in due course."
