Ibrox residents evacuated from unsafe tenement face up to six month wait to return home

Dozens of residents of a Ibrox tenement have been left without their possessions or a place to stay after the building was deemed unsafe.

Eight flats in the Copland Road building were evacuated after supporting walls and its common stair and close were found to be unstable by building standards officers on November 30.

More than a dozen residents were given 20 minutes to grab their possessions before being forced to flee the building. A couple and a student living in the tenement were left with no where to stay and had to be helped by Glasgow City Council's Homelessness Services.

Anyone not home at the time was left unable to remove any possessions.

It's believed that six of the 12 flats were rented and two were owner-occupied at the time.

Work to stabilise the building is expected to take several months.

A cannabis cultivation was discovered in one of the flats that council officers were unable to get an answer from.

Police were called to force entry to the property and several cannabis plants were recovered.

One of the building's residents told Glasgow Live: "We were evacuated due to foundation issues on Monday and the road was completely closed off.

"We were given around 20 minutes to grab our stuff and have been told we'll be out for at least two months.

"Other residents weren't home at the time so haven't been able to get in to get any of their stuff. It couldn't have happened at a worse time with the restrictions in place."

A GCC spokesperson said: "Glasgow City Council officers were called to the property last Monday afternoon and due to the condition of various supporting walls it was deemed unsafe and we ordered for it be evacauted.

"As this was ongoing during the evening our officers asked for assistance from the police as there was no answer from some of the flats within the building and we couldn't secure the building until we knew there was no-one there. Police forced entry to assist and found a cannabis cultivation inside."
