Ibrahima Konate's "strange" admission hints at Liverpool role under Jurgen Klopp

Ibrahima Konate has hinted at his potential role for Liverpool this season under Jurgen Klopp.

The French defender arrived at Anfield from RB Leipzig after the Reds agreed to pay his £36m release clause.

Konate is set to line up alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip at the heart of the Liverpool defence.

But it seems that the 22-year-old isn't just thinking about his defensive duties ahead of next season.

At 6ft3 Konate is nothing short of dominant in the air, and will certainly be a nightmare for attackers and defenders from set pieces.

But he claims that he is actually more dangerous in the opponents box when he has the ball at his feet.

"Yes, I am big, I am strong and I am not scared with the ball," Konate told the club's website.

"I can score more with my foot than my head, it is a little bit strange! This is me!

"Yes, I have this quality, but I have to work again and again and more and more and more for being a very good defender.

How do you think Konate will do for Liverpool this season? Let us know in the comments below

"I have watched some Premier League games and everybody knows there is so much intensity, strong players. This is difficult but I [will] love the challenge."

Konate got stuck into his first training session this week as a Liverpool player, meaning he is beginning to get a taste of playing with Van Dijk and co.

And he admits that he is looking forward to picking up tips from everyone on the team in time.

"Of course I will learn [from] these players, but not just with these players, with every player on this team. It’s just the start and with time it will be [a lot] better."

Konate is also hoping to build strong relationships with everyone in the Liverpool set-up, but admits he has spoken mostly to Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.

"With Van Dijk a little bit," he replied when asked who he has bonded with so far. "Mane because he speaks French.

"Naby, I knew him for a long time; Origi and Salah. I think I can speak with every player step by step, it will be good."

Konate has been handed the no. 5 shirt, recently vacated by Georginio Wijnaldum following his move to PSG.

And he admits that he is under no illusion of the shoes he has to fill.

"I think it’s an important number for this club," he said of the number 5 shirt. "A great player had this number before me.

"I have not pressure but a little bit of pressure because I have to improve for the future. I hope I will do great things with this number."
