Ibrahima Konate responds to Liverpool transfer rumours with Reds deal at 'advanced stage'

Liverpool transfer target Ibrahima Konate admits he has had been inundated with phone calls as a move to Anfield edges closer.

The RB Leipzig defender could be joining Dayot Upamecano in heading for the exit door this summer.

Bayern Munich have pounced for the highly-rated centre-half and Liverpool could now be doing similarly.

The Reds were priced out of a mid-season move but are poised to meet Konate's £34m release clause to get the deal over the line this summer.

Jurgen Klopp's defensive options have been heavily tested this term with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all facing lengthy spells out.

And Konate, who is trying to focus on the current campaign, admits he has been regularly contacted about a move.

He told L'Equipe : "I woke up, I saw my phone ringing all over the place. I just wanted to tell them, 'Hey, I played yesterday, I'm tired, leave me alone.'

Frankly, I don't even watch this. We can't focus on that, there are the Euros and then my return to the club.

"You have to focus on that and not on the external things."

Klopp bought in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in the January transfer window as he sought reinforcements at the back.

The German waited until the last minute before bringing in new faces as he addressed an inflated market.

He said in January: "You know the clubs where the centre-halves are playing, because everyone is talking about them. Tell me if one of these clubs needs the money and needs to sell a player?

"And if they need money then they want crazy money.

"I am not sure there is an £80million centre-back available at the moment and a club thinks 'We can get £80m for him so we will sell him.'

"The teams would not sell this calibre of player now."
