Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip decision explained by Jurgen Klopp ahead of Man United vs Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has explained the decision to leave Joel Matip out of his starting line-up and for Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United.

The Reds boss has made two changes from the side that beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek.

Ibrahima Konate comes in to replace Matip, while Diogo Jota starts in place of Sadio Mane in the front three.

The absence of Fabinho caused a stir when the team was announced, with the Brazilian missing out with a minor knee problem.

Matip has been replaced by Matip for rotation, and Klopp has confirmed that view before the game.

Konate arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer and has just one Premier League appearance to his name before today.

Klopp spoke how the centre-back has impressed during training, and why the trip to Old Trafford was the right game to start the France youth international.

“We have to use the squad, that’s how it is,” Klopp told Sky Sports before kick-off.

He added: “In a game like this, you’re not going to make six changes.

“Ibou is training on the highest level. Of course Joel is a great player, but we cannot just push him through all the time.

“We saw a few things where we thought this would be a good game for Ibou, now he starts alongside Virgil and the other guys, and hopefully he’ll have a good game.
